Ace Attorney 3: Trials And Tribulations
Doug Swallow - YES
I’m pretty sure on this one. Doug and Dahlia had to have been face-to-face when she shoved him into the electrical wires.
Kane Bullard - UNCLEAR BUT PROBABLY YES
We don’t know a lot about the details of Luke Atmey killing Kane, but due to the fact that Kane died to a blow on the head and there’s only one entrance to his office, we have no reason to assume that Luke snuck up behind him. This means that Kane and Luke were face-to-face when he died and yadda yadda you get the rest.
Glen Elg - PARTIALLY
Unfortunately, Glen didn’t see Furio putting the poison in his coffee, (otherwise he wouldn’t have drank it) so even with a Seance, there’d be no definitive proof that Furio did the deed. However, the Seance would’ve proven that Furio was there when Glen was killed, and Victor was not, so the whole stageplay that Furio put on to make a fake witness would’ve been for nothing.
Valeria Hawthorne - UNCLEAR
Again, we don’t know a ton about how Dahlia actually went about killing Valerie, just about how she covered it up. We know that Valerie was stabbed in the back though, so we can’t definitively say if she saw Dahlia before she died. I assume they talked about something before Dahlia went for the kill though, but we don’t know for sure.
Elise Deauxnim - UHHHHH
So, here’s where we run into a pretty big snag, something that the Divination Seance doesn’t explain. The Divination Seance shows the victim’s memories and, as far as I remember, spirit channelers don’t remember anything that happens while a spirit is possessing them. So what does the Divination Seance show when the victim dies while they’re channeling someone?? Would we see Dahlia’s memories before she was forcefully driven out of Elise’s body? Or would the last of Elise’s memories be her preparing to channel Dahlia? I’d assume it’s the latter, but this never happens in Spirit of Justice, so we have no way of knowing definitively.
If the Divination Seance shows Elise’s final moments as her preparing to channel Dahlia, the answer is obviously a big fat NO. There would be no way to tell that Godot killed her if we skip past the part where she actually gets killed.
If the Divination Seance shows Elise’s final moments as Dahlia’s memories before she gets stabbed in the back, the answer is still probably NO. Dahlia managed to slash Godot in his eye before getting stabbed, so presumably she saw his face. But Dahlia never testifies to seeing Godot and she genuinely thinks that Maya was the one that stabbed her. Combine this with the fact that it was dark in the garden and it seems like Dahlia never saw Godot, and nicking him in the eye was purely accidental.
There’s also the extra snafu of Elise Deauxnim being a fake name, meaning they’d have to figure out that she’s actually Misty Fey before they could even perform the Seance.
How many Ace Attorney cases would be solved immediately if they used the Divination Seance?
For those who don’t know, the Divination Seance is a mechanic introduced in the 6th main Ace Attorney game: Spirit of Justice. The way it works is that a spirit medium communes with the soul of the dead, and makes their final memories visible in the Pool of Souls. All of their senses are displayed, from what they saw to what they heard to what they smelled before they died. In game, the Divination Seance is usually used to Phoenix’s disadvantage (obviously), but what I wanted to know is what would happen if the Divination Seance was used in cases that took place not in the Kingdom of Khura’in. If the court could see what the victim saw seconds before their death, how much would that fuck over the real killer? Let’s go through the death of (almost) every single victim and find out: would this case be solved if they used the Divination Seance? This will be updated with each game every day, unless I forget.
(Thanks to my buddy Keepay for helping me out with this! He did all of the AAI 1 and 2 cases because my memory on those is pretty fuzzy.)
Things to Remember:
Divination Seance is derived from the victim’s memories, meaning if they don’t recognize a person’s voice, they won’t be able to identify it.
Divination Seance only works if the victim’s true name (and less importantly, what they look like) is known.
The victim has to actually be dead for a Seance to be possible.
Ace Attorney 1
Cindy Stone - YES
Frank had already broken into Cindy's home when she walked in, so there’s no way she wouldn’t have seen him before he bludgeoned her. A Divination Seance would clearly show this.
Mia Fey - NO
At first, this looks like the exact same situation as the Cindy Stone case. Mia and Redd White were face-to-face before she died, so he would’ve clearly shown up in the Divination Seance, right?
But then there’s that damn updated autopsy report.
Edgeworth stated that Mia lived for a few minutes after she was hit, and Divination Seances only show the last few seconds of the victim’s life. This means that the Divination Seance wouldn’t have shown the actual bludgeoning, or Redd White. As suspect as that updated autopsy report is, Edgeworth himself said that he never forged evidence, so we have to take him at his word here.
Jack Hammer - YES
Dee and Jack were face-to-face when she pushed him. I don’t think we ever learn the details of their struggle, so maybe it would still be unclear whether or not it was self defense on Vasquez’s part.
Robert Hammond - YES
Again again, Yanni and Hammond saw each other before Yanni shot Hammond in the heart. We don’t get a lot of details about what happened in the shack, but we have no reason to assume this wasn’t the case. I promise these are gonna get more interesting.
Gregory Edgeworth - MAYBE
So in this case, the Divination Seance would show that the defendants (Miles Edgeworth and Yanni Yogi in this case) are innocent, but wouldn’t show who the culprit is, so I’m gonna say at the very least, it’s partially solved. The Seance would reveal that Gregory didn’t die when Miles threw the gun, and that all three of them passed out before the second gunshot was fired. However, we know from Von Karma’s testimony that Gregory was unconscious when he was shot, so he wouldn’t have seen his killer’s face.
But! Miles said that he heard Von Karma scream right after he threw the gun, obviously that means that Gregory heard it too. The question is, would he have recognized it as Von Karma’s voice, and would it have shown up as Von Karma’s voice in the Pool of Souls? To answer that, I point you towards Inga’s Divination Seance. Here he recognizes the voice he’s talking to over the phone as one of his subordinates (after a refining from Rayfa) but even after it’s proven that Datz was the one laughing over the phone, the sound still shows up in the pool as just “Laughter.”
This is why it’s important to remember that the Divination Seance is derived from the victim’s memories. Inga recognized his subordinate's voice (but probably not his name, lol) but he didn’t know what Datz’s voice sounds like, at least not well enough to recognize it. In the same vein, Gregory would absolutely recognize Von Karma’s voice because they just spend the whole day in court together, as well as them meeting during the investigation.
Now what this really all boils down to is if Gregory would recognize Von Karma screaming in particular. Miles didn’t recognize the voice even though he also knew Von Karma, but he was also a stressed and delirious kid when he heard the scream. Gregory’s memories are probably more reliable, and he’s probably heard Von Karma shouting either during the Inherited Turnabout investigation or the trial afterward. But, as much as I wanna say this is a yes, we can’t know for sure.
Bruce Goodman - YES
After that long-winded explanation, we’re back to another easy one. Bruce and Damon were alone in the evidence room when Damon did the deed, so he would clearly show up in the vision, or at the very least, his voice would be heard.
Neil Marshall - NO
This is another Gregory situation, but unfortunately much more unclear. Neil was unconscious when he died so he wouldn’t have seen Gant but at least it would be clear that neither Ema or Darke killed him. Neil had already knocked out Darke when Ema pushed him, and it would’ve been clear that Neil didn’t die from Ema’s shove, but much later. Of course, since Neil was blacked out, the argument could be made that Darke woke up first, and simply stabbed Neil while Neil was unconscious. Even with the Divination Seance, there’s no way to prove that Gant did the deed.

If you had to pair Justine with any character in the AA series, who do you think would be an ideal partner for her?
hmm this ones a tough one. in reality i wouldnt be surprised if she an aroace queen or at least on those spectrums but if i have to...
maybe rhoda teneiro? i think she would be a good partner (in her age group)
A lot of the men her age just either seem not her type or met her in aai2 and they didnt seem to hit it off well. a lot of the women her age are villain characters, dead or dont seem her type.
#for the real rare pair tho what if i suggested glen elg for no reason what so ever#also i was looking at justines general age group to make this and i just realised that if justine and aura ever met#those two would butt heads but because theyre too similar yknow#does the ace attorney timeline break anyone elses brain as well?#larry butz is the same age as geiru toneido#ace attorney#justine courtney#aai2

The legal system in the universe exists in the state they do because there is so much crime that spending more than 3 days on the simultaneous trial and investigation is a waste of time.
A man who has a hairstyle that vaguely resembles that of a main character is able to pretend to be him by using a cardboard attorneys badge.
High schoolers with no experience with the law are regularly allowed to act as paralegals.
The police have a cartoon mascot who in turn has merch, lore, and an entire theme park based on it.
One of the main antagonists has a pet dog named “Clams”.
In a spin off game, the main character is mind controlled into thinking he and his assistant have been bakers for 5 years when in actuality it was around 2 days. He remembers he was a lawyer and it is never really brought up again.
The producer of one of the most popular kids shows had close ties to the mob. This fact is ultimately not too important to the case.
A main character in the third entry is a man who woke up from a years long coma and became a prosecutor out of spite for the main character. He regularly waxes poetic about the ~17 cups of coffee he drinks per trial.
Everyone talks about how silly Ace Attorney is but only ever mentions the parrot and the Almost Christmas thing, so here’s a few highlights of insane shit that happens in Ace Attorney that I personally adore:
The famous orca defendant from Phoenix’s first case after disbarment turns out to be the secret sibling of another orca… who was also falsely accused of murder
The final case of what is widely considered one of the best games in the series involves a clown crushing the president of fantasy Hong Kong to death with a hot air balloon. The president turns out to be a body double who replaced the original president 15 years prior. This is all taken completely seriously
The inciting incident of effectively the entire series was an episode of cupcake wars that went really, REALLY poorly
The plot of the most recent mainline game is “what if defense attorneys were systematically oppressed by the government”
The main character gets hit by a car in one of the cases and walks it off. He does sprain his ankle though
Two separate characters can summon butterflies in court and make their scarves levitate. They have literally no relation to each other and this inexplicable telekinesis is never mentioned by the cast even once
A major plot point in one of the cases is someone tying a corpse to the end of a rope and then pendulum swinging them across a bridge so aggressively they get launched 30 feet into the air on the other side. This is fully animated and you get to watch it happen no less than 4 times
#I’d be remised to not mention Glen Elg#He’s a computer programmer and potential cyberterrorist with a gambling addiction who wins the lottery and immediately dies.#His name is the way it is because it needed to be palindrome and has no relation to the character whatsoever.#In the French localization his name is Marc Ram. A computer pun AND a palindrome.#Glen Elg is the stupidest name ever I am his number one fan and also the only fan he has#fia says things#I hope it’s okay that I added onto this lol I wanted to share my favorite crazy moments#why can’t I hyperfixate on something with a normal amount of plot that is easy to explain for once

Ace Attorney News Roundup
Very behind on several of these, but news doesn't always cross over from twitter to tumblr, so I thought I'd recap some things here:
AAI 15th Anniversary
First: today marks the 15th anniversary of Ace Attorney Investigations! Tatsuro Iwamoto, the art director for AAI, made a celebratory sketch of Kay to commemorate the occasion (link to tweet):
Iwamoto has also been drawing fanart of minor characters throughout the ace attorney trilogy on his twitter page. These include: April May, Dee Vasquez, Yanni Yogi (and Polly), Richard Wellington, Turner Grey, Moe the Clown, Max Galactica, Oldbag (alien mode), Matt Engarde, Doug Swallow, Luke Atmey (and Mask☆DeMasque), Viola Cadaverini, Valerie Hawthorne, Lisa Basil, and Glen Elg. Technically these aren't official art, but it's always good to have more art of obscurer characters!
The Great Ace Attorney Hit A Million Copies
Some big news: The Great Ace Attorney's 2021 port hit a million copies sold, making it the second ace attorney game to hit Capcom's platinum titles list, the first being the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy from 2019! This comes just under 3 years since the release of the duology in July 2021. In comparison, the original AA trilogy hit a million copies in December 2020, shortly under two years since the release of the game in February 2019.
The update to the platinum titles sales shows that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy has reached 3.3 million copies sold, which means that it has sold over a million copies in less than a year! (My last post that had information on sales, where I said the trilogy had sold 2.3 million, was in September 2023.) It also makes it the 30th highest selling title for Capcom, which I think is pretty impressive considering giants like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter are making up the majority of the top 30.
So, the AA trilogy made its first million in approximately 22 months, but now it has sold a million over the last 8 months. I don't know anything about game sales and so this next part is just speculation, but I wouldn't expect it to be very common for games to sell more years out from their release compared to at release? I think that's really saying something about the long-term staying power of this series, and its increasing popularity over the last few years despite not having any new releases (aside from ports - and porting the series to all platforms probably has something to do with the popularity.)
The AA Twitter Is Very Active Right Now
Here are a couple of bullet points with no relation to each other:
-The official ace attorney twitter has been VERY active, particularly the last week. They've been doing the same "weekly book club" for each case that they did for the Great Ace Attorney duology, but that wrapped up last week and now it's just been memes, at least one a day. In most of my time following this account over the last uhh six years, they mostly ramp up marketing around new releases but are kinda silent the rest of the time, with the occasional meme, but definitely not at this frequency.
-Summer Game Fest is next week.
That probably means nothing, as it has every other time I thought we might get some big ace attorney news, but I think it's worth noting.
So, lots of stuff happened this week! Thanks for reading.
